The Science of Garbage / Kwak Jaesik / Munhakgwa Jiseongsa
[Financial News] Where do the items thrown into a garbage bin go, and through what processes do they become resources again? The Science of Garbage, a new book by environmental engineer and science fiction novelist Kwak Jaesik, explains the science and industrial principles behind waste treatment.
The book contains 20 stories across Part 1, "Burying in the Ground," and Part 2, "Recycling." It examines everything from Nanjido and Sudokwon Landfill Site to the recycling of batteries, paper, and plastics, explaining the science found in discarded materials, including quantum theory used to analyze hazardous substances and microorganisms that produce landfill gas.
Alongside the environmental and economic benefits of recycling, the book also considers concerns about pollution and issues related to quality and safety. It introduces artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic technologies that use cameras and sensors to sort waste. By weaving together historical anecdotes and industrial examples, it presents the waste problem as a challenge shaped by the interaction of technology, policy, and economics.
