[Financial News Jeju = Reporter Jeong Yong-bok] An event will be held to commemorate the 108th anniversary of the Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Struggle, which took place in Jeju in 1918 against Japanese imperialism, preceding the March 1st Movement.
According to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on the 2nd, the '108th Anniversary and 32nd Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Struggle Commemoration Ceremony' will be held on the 3rd at 10:00 AM at the birthplace of the anti-Japanese movement at Muo Beopjeongsa on 1100-ro, Seogwipo City.
This year's theme is 'The Courage of That Day When We Rose First, the Spirit of Jeju to Continue with the Residents.' The Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Struggle was an anti-Japanese independence movement launched by Jeju patriots in October 1918 against the invasion and oppression of Imperial Japan.
It remains an important scene in the history of the local anti-Japanese movement in that it took place in Jeju prior to the March 1st Movement of 1919.
About 500 people are expected to attend this ceremony, including bereaved families of independence activists, members of the Korean Liberation Association, students, the Buddhist community, officials from institutions and organizations, and provincial residents.
The event will proceed in the order of a progress report, the reading of a resolution and the screening of a commemorative video, commemorative speeches, congratulatory remarks, memorial speeches, and a commemorative performance.
This year, emphasis was placed on the generational succession of the anti-Japanese spirit. The president of the Jungmun Youth Chamber's special members' association and male and female student representatives will read a resolution together. The purpose is for a generation that did not directly experience the struggle to remember the history of 108 years ago and carry on its significance.
An exhibition wall introducing the development and historical value of the Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Struggle will also be installed at the venue. A separate memorial altar will also be operated for visitors. This measure is intended to allow the elderly and bereaved families, who may find it difficult to travel from the venue to Uiyeolsa, to pay their respects more comfortably.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province plans to use the commemorative ceremony not merely as a memorial event, but as an opportunity to inform future generations of the historical significance of the Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Struggle.
In particular, the plan is to have students directly participate in reading the resolution so that the history of Jeju's anti-Japanese movement does not remain merely history in textbooks but continues as a memory for the current generation.
Kang Seok-du, head of the Jeju Provincial Veterans Affairs Office, said, "The Muo Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Struggle is a history in which Jeju's ancestors demonstrated their will for self-reliance and independence through action," adding, "We will remember their courage and sacrifice and ensure that Jeju's anti-Japanese spirit is passed down to future generations."
