[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump, who unilaterally announced South Korean investment in the Alaska LNG project, appealed for support by promoting the local Republican senator for the second consecutive day. Trump, who is preparing for the November midterm elections, said he would visit Alaska soon.
According to CNN and other local media outlets, Trump began a nationwide campaign tour on the 1st (local time), starting in Oklahoma and continuing through Election Day on November 3. Speaking at an event in Durant, Oklahoma, Trump said, "We have great candidates, but some are in tight races," adding, "You have to get out and vote."
He referred to 35 battleground states and said, "This election depends on 35 races," naming Michigan and Texas as closely contested areas. He then said he would visit Alaska as well, adding, "There is a great senator, Dan S. Sullivan, and we're going to get him elected." Trump is scheduled to campaign in Texas and Oklahoma on the 1st, followed by visits to Ohio and Alabama. He is expected to arrive in Nebraska on the 5th. His schedule for a visit to Alaska, however, has not been announced.
Alaska's current senator is Republican Dan S. Sullivan. He is already a two-term senator and is seeking a third term in the November midterm elections. In Alaska, Dan S. Sullivan will face Democrat Mary Peltola and independent Dan J. Sullivan. Dan J. Sullivan also filed as a Republican during the candidate registration process, but election officials decided not to list his party affiliation on the ballot, treating him like an independent candidate to prevent voter confusion.
Republicans accused Democrats of putting forward a candidate with the same name to take votes away from Dan S. Sullivan, but Dan J. Sullivan's campaign denied the allegation.
After mentioning Dan J. Sullivan again at the event on the 1st, Trump told voters not to confuse the incumbent senator with the candidate who shares his name, saying, "If Sullivan loses 2 percentage points because of this person, that could decide the election."
Alaska has traditionally been a Republican stronghold, but the party's popularity has been declining recently amid rising prices. At a White House event on the 30th of last month, Trump announced that South Korea would invest tens of billions of dollars in the Alaska LNG project. Dan S. Sullivan, the incumbent senator, also attended the event.
At the investment announcement, Trump emphasized that the Alaska LNG project would be "one of the largest energy projects in American history" and create 12,000 construction jobs and 1,000 operating jobs. He also praised Dan S. Sullivan as "a great senator who is entirely responsible for the gas pipeline, the projects we're working on, and the many jobs we've created."
