[Financial News] Soongsil University said on the 2nd that Choi Dae-sun, dean of its AI College and the AI Graduate School, received the Order of Service Merit, Red Stripes, at the 6th Personal Information Protection Day ceremony held at Grace Hall at El Tower in Seoul on Sept. 30.
Choi was recognized for his contributions to systematizing methods for diagnosing and mitigating AI privacy threats while serving as chair of the Risk Management Subcommittee of the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC)'s AI Privacy Public-Private Policy Council.
The ceremony, hosted by the PIPC, was held under the theme "An Innovative AI Society Leaping Forward Through Trust." Approximately 350 people, including award recipients and officials from related fields, attended. A total of 13 government awards and 52 commendations from the PIPC chair were presented.
The AI Privacy Public-Private Policy Council is a public-private consultative body launched by the PIPC in February this year. Thirty-seven members from industry, academia, the legal community, and civic groups are discussing a regulatory framework that considers both the benefits and risks of AI.
The council operates through three subcommittees: data processing standards, risk management, and data subject rights. As chair of the Risk Management Subcommittee, Choi participated in analyzing the complex risks that may arise during personal information processing and developing methods to diagnose and mitigate AI privacy threats.
Choi is also continuing his research in AI security and safety. Soongsil University's AI College offers four majors through its Department of AI Software: artificial intelligence, information security, software, and AI systems. The AI Graduate School has departments of AI Convergence Security and AI Bio.
Choi said, "I find it even more meaningful to receive this major award as a technology researcher, following the many people who have contributed to the development of laws and institutions in the field of personal information protection." He added, "As technologies that can achieve both personal information protection and utilization become increasingly important in the AI era, I will fulfill my responsibility as a technology researcher in building a trustworthy AI society."
