[Financial News] The Special Prosecutor's Team for Kim Kun-hee, led by Special Counsel Min Joung-kie, sought one year and six months in prison and a 33 million won fine on the 2nd at a trial for Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon on charges of violating the Political Funds Act. The hearing was held before Criminal Division 22 of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Presiding Judge Cho Hyung-woo. The team also sought one year in prison each for former deputy mayor Kang Cheol-won and Kim Han-jung, who is known as a sponsor and appeared alongside him in the defendants' dock.
Oh Se-hoon is accused of receiving poll results from political broker Myeong Tae-gyun on 10 occasions in total ahead of the April 7, 2021 Seoul mayoral by-election, and allegedly having businessman Kim Han-jung, known as a longtime supporter, pay 33 million won in costs on his behalf.
The lower court sentenced Oh to a 10 million won fine, which would result in the loss of his mayoral office, and ordered him to pay 21 million won in additional collection. At the time, the special prosecutor's team also sought one year and six months in prison and 33 million won in additional collection for Oh, as well as one year in prison each for former deputy mayor Kang Cheol-won and Kim Han-jung.
Elected public officials lose their offices if they are finally convicted of violating the Political Funds Act and receive a prison sentence or a fine of 1 million won or more.
