[Financial News] The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority announced that it held the Forum on Building a Carbon-Neutral Ecosystem at New Ports at BEXCO on the 2nd.
The forum was held in conjunction with the 12th Busan R&D Week to discuss ways to cooperate in identifying new carbon-neutral industries and business models centered on Busan New Port and the planned Jinhae New Port.
The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone is considered to have significant potential to create new industries and business models during the transition to carbon neutrality. It has a Tri-Port logistics infrastructure linking ports, airports and railways centered on Busan New Port, a global logistics hub, as well as a strong manufacturing base in shipbuilding, machinery and energy in the southeastern region.
Building on these locational and industrial strengths, the authority is working to demonstrate and commercialize carbon-neutral technologies, identify new service models, support the growth of related companies and attract global investment. Since the second half of last year, it has established a cooperative framework and continued discussions with relevant organizations, including Busan Port Authority (BPA), Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), Korean Register, Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR), Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding (RIMS), Korea CCUS Promotion Group and Busan Techno Park.
At the forum, presentations introduced the progress and outcomes to date, including the role of free economic zones in linking and expanding R&D, the carbon-neutral technology and industry value chain for new ports, the global shipping industry's transition to decarbonization and new opportunities for K-shipbuilding equipment.
Following the presentations, Lee Ho-seop, head of the Korea CCUS Promotion Group, chaired a panel discussion. Representatives from KITECH, PANASIA, BPA, HMM and UNION participated as panelists and discussed ways to create an innovative carbon-neutral ecosystem at new ports linked to regional industries, as well as the role of companies.
Park Seong-ho, head of the authority, said, "Using this forum as an opportunity, we will work closely with relevant organizations on policies and operations in the port sector. At the same time, leveraging the strengths of the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone, we will identify new business models and high-value-added industries linked to carbon neutrality."
