[Financial News] Customers' personal credit information was leaked from KB Kookmin Bank due to an external breach. KB Kookmin Bank has blocked the relevant server and access routes and activated a company-wide emergency response system to protect customers and prevent recurrence.
KB Kookmin Bank announced on the 2nd that the personal (credit) information of 119 customers was leaked due to an external breach.
The bank explained that the information leak occurred from an employee mobile work support system and is unrelated to customers' financial transactions, such as internet banking or mobile banking. The leaked items vary by customer and include customer names, phone numbers, addresses, and encrypted resident registration numbers.
KB Kookmin Bank blocked the relevant server and access route immediately upon recognizing the possibility of information leakage through abnormal external access on the night of the 30th of last month. The affected customers were individually notified of the leakage and methods to prevent secondary damage.
A dedicated counseling center is operated separately from the main call center to respond to reports of damage and inquiries. The bank urged the public to be cautious of phone calls, text messages, and emails impersonating banks or courier companies, and to refrain from clicking on links from unknown sources or complying with requests to enter personal or financial information.
KB Kookmin Bank stated, "We plan to fully compensate customers for any damages caused by this information leak," adding, "We are operating a company-wide emergency response system, including reviewing the entire relevant process from scratch, to prevent further damage and recurrence."
Previously, an incident occurred at Shinhan Bank in which the personal (credit) information of approximately 25,000 customers was leaked. The leaked data included customer names, phone numbers, annual income, and calculated loan limits. Shinhan Bank announced that it would implement emergency measures, such as blocking external IPs and suspending related services, and would fully compensate customers if any damages are confirmed.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that authorities are conducting an on-site investigation with the possibility of further damage spreading in mind.
