[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung said on the 2nd, "We will provide more generous basic pension support for low-income people," adding, "Senior jobs will also be expanded to a record 1.18 million."
In a congratulatory address at the ceremony marking the 30th Senior Citizens’ Day in Seoul, President Lee said, "The life journey of each and every older person has come together to create the history of today’s Republic of Korea."
President Lee emphasized, "The people who built the Miracle on the Han River through blood and sweat amid the ashes of war are all of you older adults here today," adding, "You are the ones who changed the great course of history at the forefront of industrialization and democratization."
He said, "Because of the tears and sweat shed by older adults, today’s Republic of Korea has become an economic powerhouse ranked among the world’s top 10 and a cultural powerhouse that moves people around the world," adding, "We must never forget those remarkable footsteps."
He also presented measures to support care in old age. President Lee said, "We will pursue health insurance coverage for caregiving expenses so that no one ever hesitates to receive treatment because of the cost." He added, "We will move away from a system that relies solely on nursing homes or hospitals and firmly strengthen the community-based care network so that older adults can receive care services in their own homes."
He added, "Starting next year, many things will change," and said, "Many things will improve enough for you to feel the difference, so I hope you will look forward to it."
He also called for solidarity between generations. President Lee said, "The government will do its utmost to create a mature society in which the older generation understands the difficulties faced by young people, while young people honor and respect older adults."
Around 400 people attended the event, including First Lady Kim Hye-kyung, Korean Senior Citizens Association Chairman Lee Jung-keun, Democratic Party of Korea leader Kim Min-seok, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk, Republic of Korea Constitutional Association Chairman Chung Dae-chul, and Minister of Health and Welfare Eun-gyeong Jeong. During the event, President Lee personally presented older adults with longevity canes called Cheongnyeojang and awarded Orders of Civil Merit, Civil Merit Medals, and commendations to people who contributed to advancing senior welfare.
