[Financial News] HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build an offshore substation off Taean. The company is expanding its reach into offshore wind power based on its offshore plant capabilities.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 2nd that it had signed a project contract with Taean Wind Power to handle the design, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of an offshore substation.
The project involves building an offshore substation that will transmit electricity generated by an offshore wind farm to land. The 500MW-class facility will be installed in waters near Gaeuido-ri, Taean County. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries previously signed a preliminary design contract for the project in March and a preferred supply contract in July. After detailed consultations between the two companies, they signed the final contract.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries was selected as the project operator in part because of its self-developed offshore substation model. Last year, it obtained DNV verification of the basic design for a 500MW-class offshore substation model, and it completed verification of the detailed design in August this year. This made it the first Korean offshore substation provider to have the design's compliance and safety recognized under international regulations and standards. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' offshore substation technology is rooted in its offshore plant capabilities. The company is leveraging its experience in the plant business to expand into offshore wind power.
An HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official said, "We will carry out this offshore substation project reliably based on our accumulated offshore plant capabilities," adding, "Going forward, we will secure additional business opportunities in renewable energy and strengthen our competitiveness in related markets."
Meanwhile, a contract-signing ceremony was held that day, attended by Won Kwang-sik, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Marine Energy Business Division, and Clément Elvire de Balzac, CEO of the Taean Wind Power project, among others. Taean Wind Power is a joint venture of Korea Western Power, Singaporean renewable-energy company Vena Energy, and Danish green-energy investment and development firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
