[Financial News Jeju = Jung Yong-bok, correspondent] Efforts to extend the Jeju Uprising's values of reconciliation, coexistence, peace and human rights through international solidarity have led to support for flood victims in Nepal.
According to the Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation on October 2, the foundation donated 1.5 million won on September 30 to support flood victims in Nepal through the Jeju Branch of the Korean Red Cross. The contribution was raised through the voluntary participation of the foundation's employees.
After news of the flooding in Nepal emerged, the foundation placed a voluntary donation box in its office last September. Employees contributed throughout the month, raising 1.5 million won, which was donated in full for flood recovery and support for displaced victims. The significance lies not in the amount itself, but in the foundation's effort to turn the message of peace and human rights cultivated through the Jeju Uprising into solidarity with disaster victims overseas.
The Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation works to promote the historical significance of the Jeju Uprising through efforts to uncover the truth, commemorate victims, provide peace and human rights education, and conduct international exchanges.
Through this fundraising effort, the foundation also focused on sharing with people suffering around the world its experience of transforming the pain of the Jeju Uprising into the values of reconciliation, coexistence, peace and human rights.
Lim Mun-cheol, chairman of the Jeju 4.3 Peace Foundation, said, "I offer my deepest sympathies to the people of Nepal who have suffered extensive damage." He added, "I hope this contribution will, even if only slightly, help affected residents return to their daily lives as soon as possible." He also stated, "We will work to stand with the international community in its pain, continue our solidarity, and widely promote the Jeju Uprising's values of peace and human rights."
The foundation's emphasis on 'globalizing the Jeju Uprising' is also expanding toward demonstrating the universal values of peace and human rights through concrete international solidarity activities.
