[Financial News] Busan Metropolitan City Government is seeking a design that embodies the vision and identity of World Design Capital Busan 2028.
Busan Metropolitan City Government and the Busan Design Promotion Agency announced on the 2nd that they will hold the 2028 WDC Busan Pavilion International Design Competition.
The competition will be open to companies, organizations, and individual businesses in related fields from South Korea and abroad. It will be conducted in two stages through an open competition from this month through December.
The organizers will select a design that connects fixed and mobile pavilions through a single design system, allowing them to expand to various locations and events across Busan.
The competition is not simply about creating a single pavilion. Its central aim is to establish a design language for WDC that can move and expand throughout Busan.
Rather than selecting a simple facility or a completed architectural design, the organizers are seeking an adaptable design that creatively interprets Busan's urban, marine, and cultural characteristics and applies them to various elements, including form, materials, colors, graphics, and signage. The design must also be capable of being modified according to the location and scale.
For the fixed pavilion, proposals should identify representative spaces and application plans across Busan, taking into account urban identity, accessibility, openness, and connections with surrounding spaces. For the mobile pavilion, participants must present application and modification scenarios for at least three environments, such as urban plazas, coastal waterfronts, and event venues, so that WDC's identity can be maintained even when the location changes.
The city's plan is to create a legacy that can remain in use after Busan's designation as a World Design Capital in 2028. This will be achieved through a modular design that is easy to move, transport, assemble, dismantle, store, expand, and reuse.
The competition will be held in two stages. Two teams will be selected through the first-stage concept proposal review. After approximately four weeks of design development with the selected teams, the final review will choose one winning team.
Eligible participants include companies, organizations, and individual businesses in related fields, such as design, architecture and space, exhibitions and the environment, services and experiences, and industrial design, modular design, and fabrication, from South Korea and abroad. Participants may enter individually or as a joint team.
Applications are accepted from the day of the announcement until 5 p.m. on the 26th.
Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, "The World Design Capital Busan 2028 pavilion will go beyond being a simple facility and become a space where citizens and visitors can directly experience the values and identity of World Design Capital Busan 2028."
