[Financial News]  Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a strong warning that Russia could use all types of weapons if its territory of Kaliningrad comes under attack.
According to major foreign media outlets on the 1st (local time), Putin attended the annual Valdai International Discussion Club in Moscow that day and said, "If a direct attack on the Russian Federation occurs, the issue of immediately deploying and using all types of weapons possessed by our country will inevitably be put on the agenda."
Kaliningrad is a strategically important Russian military stronghold and exclave bordering Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic Sea. Military tensions surrounding the region have intensified in recent months.
NATO member states have conducted several military exercises along the Kaliningrad border in recent months. Russia has strongly criticized them as "provocative words and actions by NATO leadership and member states," while NATO has condemned Russia's "threats to use force, including irrational nuclear threats," leaving the two sides at odds.
Putin again criticized NATO's repeated military exercises in the Baltic Sea and alleged attempts to provoke Russian vessels, saying, "All these measures are worsening the situation."
He stressed, however, "We have no intention of attacking anyone first, whether it is 2029, 2030 or 2050." He added, "But if we face aggression, we will have no choice but to respond, and European citizens must clearly understand this."
