According to the Changdeokgung Palace Management Office under the Korea Heritage Service’s Royal Palaces and Tombs Center on the 2nd, the event “A Small Library in the Rear Garden: Reading at an Ancient Palace at Seonhyangjae” will be held at Seonhyangjae from the 7th to the 18th. It will operate from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Seonhyangjae is a royal study located east of Yeongyeongdang Hall, where books were stored and read. The “good fragrance” in its name refers to the scent of books. It is usually visible only from outside while visitors tour Yeongyeongdang Hall, but its interior will be opened during the event.
The building consists of a large central open hall and heated rooms on both sides, with awnings installed along the front to block sunlight. The interior opening offers visitors an opportunity to explore the structure and function of an old study while reading.
Visitors may freely read humanities and palace-related books provided inside or read books they bring themselves. Seonhyangjae is available free of charge on-site to anyone visiting the rear garden. However, admission tickets for Changdeokgung Palace Complex and the rear garden must be purchased separately.
Children aged 12 and under will receive activity kits for decorating bookmarks with stickers. The kits will be distributed to the first 100 children each day, and distribution will end once the prepared supply runs out.
A meeting with author Eun Hee-kyung will also be held at 1:30 p.m. on the 12th in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s Jeongdok Library. The discussion will focus on “What Literature Gives Us.”
The author event is intended for about 50 outstanding participants in the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s civic reading initiative, Book Wave Crew. Book Wave Crew is a group where parents and citizens practice reading in their daily lives and share their experiences.
Further information about the event is available on the Changdeokgung Palace Complex website.
