According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the 2nd, the ministry and the Ministry of Personnel Management will accept recommendations for candidates for private-sector members of the Literature Promotion Policy Committee from that day through the 23rd. This is the first time the public recommendation system has been used to form the committee.
The plan is to enhance openness and diversity in the committee’s membership by adding public participation to a nomination process that has so far centered on literary associations, organizations, and related institutions.
Anyone may recommend themselves, as well as writers, critics, and experts in publishing and distribution. Candidates should have expertise in literature and extensive field experience, and recommendations can be submitted through the public recommendation system website.
The Literature Promotion Policy Committee is an advisory body established under the Literature Promotion Act at the MCST. It offers opinions on major policies, including the establishment and implementation of basic plans for literary promotion.
The MCST plans to appoint 14 private-sector members in November after the Committee Recommendation Panel, which is composed of prominent figures from the literary community, reviews candidates recommended by the public and relevant institutions.
The announcement did not specify how many publicly recommended candidates would be appointed separately. The key question is whether expanding the nomination channels will lead to greater diversity in the committee’s actual membership.
An MCST policy official stated, "We expect the people recommended by the public to make a significant contribution to policymaking."
