【Financial News | Ulsan—Reporter Choi Soo-sang】Two first-year classmates at a middle school in Ulsan got into a physical altercation, leaving one student requiring emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage. Police and education authorities have launched investigations.
According to police and the Ulsan Gangbuk Office of Education on the 1st, two first-year male students got into a physical altercation in a school restroom in Ulsan’s Buk District on the 11th of last month. One of the students lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital after developing vomiting and convulsions.
The hospital diagnosed him with cerebral and cerebellar hemorrhages. As his condition worsened, he underwent two surgeries in succession.
The student regained consciousness after the surgeries but reportedly does not remember what happened and has difficulty walking unaided or swallowing food.
The injured student’s family has raised concerns about the school’s initial response, claiming that the school’s account of the incident has changed. On the day of the incident, the school reportedly explained that the injured student had slapped the other student first. However, the family claims that after reviewing CCTV footage the following day, the school said the other student had slapped and pushed the injured student first. The family also said that although it requested preservation of the CCTV footage, it was denied access to the footage.
Police are investigating how the physical altercation began and which actions occurred first, based on CCTV footage and witness statements.
The Ulsan Gangbuk Office of Education is also carrying out relevant procedures, including a fact-finding investigation, as the incident has been reported as a school violence case.
