[Financial News] Generally clear weather will continue during the early part of the National Foundation Day holiday, making it suitable for outings. However, as cold air descends from the north, temperatures will remain chillier than average until the 3rd, with the temperature difference between day and night widening to around 10 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country. The weather will change starting from the night of the 4th, and rain is forecast to fall until the morning of the 5th, mainly in the central region, Jeolla Province, and Jeju Island. Although the rain will not last long, there is a possibility that it will be accompanied by strong winds, thunder, and lightning.
Temperatures Drop on Cold Northwesterly Winds... Outings in Early Holiday Season Suitable
During a briefing on the 'National Foundation Day Holiday and Next Week Weather Outlook' on the 1st, the Korean Meteorological Administration announced that Korea would generally be under the influence of a high-pressure system until the morning of the 4th as a high-pressure system accompanied by cold, dry air from the northwest expands.
Lee Gwang-yeon, a forecast analyst at the Korean Meteorological Administration, explained, "With generally clear weather expected, temperatures have dropped overall as cold, dry air moves southward."
On the morning of the 1st, minimum temperatures in the central region generally dropped to around 10 degrees Celsius, while some areas in northern Gyeonggi and the central-northern parts of Gangwon Yeongseo fell to around 5 degrees. Below-average temperatures are expected to continue until the 3rd, before returning to average levels on the 4th and 5th. The drop in temperature is due to the influx of cold air carried by northwesterly winds. Subsequently, once a high-pressure system takes hold, "radiative cooling" occurs, where heat accumulated in the ground during the day dissipates rapidly during the clear night, cooling the air near the surface. During the day, temperatures rise due to sunlight, leading to a larger diurnal temperature range.
"Woo Jin-gyu, a weather forecaster at the Korean Meteorological Administration, said, 'The weather is expected to be generally clear during this holiday period,' adding, 'I think many of you will have plans for outings, and you will be able to spend your time in good weather.'"
However, as winds are blowing somewhat strongly, the wind chill may be lower than the actual temperature. There is a possibility of frost in northeastern Gyeonggi, inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, and parts of northeastern Gyeongbuk, so caution is advised in managing crops during the harvest season. High seas advisories are likely to remain in effect for the East Sea and the waters off Jeju Island until the 2nd, and swells are also expected along the East Coast.
Low pressure approaching from the night of the 4th... Short but 'heavy rain'
In the latter part of the holiday, a mobile high-pressure system will retreat eastward, and a trough will descend from the northwest, leading to the development of a low-pressure system. Consequently, rain is expected from the night of the 4th to the morning of the 5th, mainly in the central region, Jeolla Province, and Jeju Island. Although the rain is not expected to last long, the approach of the trough while temperatures remain low will cause atmospheric instability, potentially bringing gusts of wind and thunderstorms. An official from the Korean Meteorological Administration explained, "Even if the amount of rain is not significantly large, the precipitation will not be long and there is a possibility it will be accompanied by gusts of wind, thunderstorms, and lightning."
As the forecast period is not yet over, the areas, timing, and amount of precipitation may change. Depending on the development and movement path of the low-pressure system, rain could extend to parts of the Gyeongsang region, and there is a possibility that rain will continue in Jeju Island until the morning of the 6th.
On the 5th, there is a possibility of high waves at the level of a gale warning, mainly in the East and West Seas. From the 6th, under the influence of a high-pressure system again, generally clear or cloudy weather is expected to continue nationwide.
"Weather forecaster Lee Gwang-yeon said, 'A large temperature difference of around 10 degrees between day and night is expected in most parts of the country,' adding, 'As it is the transitional season, it is necessary to take care of one's health, including respiratory illnesses.'"
