[Financial News]  The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) will inspect safety conditions in senior citizen protection zones frequently used by older adults to mark the 30th Senior Citizens Day. It will check for hazards in traffic safety facilities and pedestrian environments, while also informing older adults how to prevent not only traffic accidents but also electrical and gas accidents at home.
MOIS announced on the 1st that it would hold a campaign to prevent safety accidents involving older adults on the 2nd in the area around the senior welfare center in Sageun-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. The Seongdong District Office, the Hanyang Police Substation of the Seoul Seongdong Police Station, and participating organizations of the Central Council for Promoting the Safety Culture Movement will join the campaign.
The site being inspected is an area newly designated as a senior citizen protection zone in May. MOIS and other agencies will check whether traffic safety facilities in the area have been properly installed and maintained, as well as whether there are places that pose risks to older adults walking.
The campaign will also target drivers and residents. Pedestrians, residents, and merchants near the senior citizen protection zone will receive guidance on safe walking practices, while drivers will be asked to slow down within the zone and give priority to protecting pedestrians.
The senior welfare center in Sageun-dong will provide daily-life safety education for older adults. The Korea Road Traffic Authority (KoROAD) will explain how to walk safely and prevent traffic accidents. The Korea Electrical Safety Corporation (KESCO) and Korea Gas Safety Corporation will provide guidance on safety rules for using electricity and gas at home. Older adults who complete the training will also receive portable shopping carts for use while walking.
MOIS plans to continue on-site inspections and safety education, focusing on senior citizen protection zones and other daily-life spaces frequently used by older adults.
Park Hyeong-bae, head of MOIS's Safety Prevention Policy Office, said, "It is important to carefully examine the risks in everyday life and create a safe environment so that older adults can go about their daily activities with peace of mind." He added, "We will continue to closely cooperate with relevant agencies and expand on-the-ground safety culture activities that older adults can experience in their daily lives."
