[Financial News] A police officer, prosecutor and judge who were reported for allegedly unlawfully arresting People Power Party lawmaker Lee Jin-sook received decisions not to indict.
According to legal sources on the 1st, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office decided not to indict the investigators at Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station, a prosecutor at the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office and a judge at Seoul Southern District Court in a case filed by the People Power Party over allegations of abuse of authority in making an arrest. The decision was made on the 17th of last month.
Earlier, police arrested Lee on Oct. 2 last year after she failed to respond to six requests to appear for questioning over alleged violations of the State Public Officials Act and Public Official Election Act, among others. The People Power Party filed a complaint the following day against the police officers, prosecutor and judge involved in applying for, requesting and issuing the arrest warrant, alleging that police obtained the warrant while concealing a written explanation for Lee's absence submitted by her side.
Prosecutors were reported to have confirmed that the written explanation for Lee's absence was attached to the arrest warrant application records. They were also said to have concluded, after considering the circumstances surrounding her failure to respond to the summons and the court's decision at the arrest review hearing, that there was no evidence supporting the abuse-of-authority allegation.
Seoul Southern District Court ordered Lee's release through an arrest review hearing on Oct. 4 last year, while stating, "It is difficult to deny the legality of the arrest itself."
Lee was reported and investigated over suspicions that, while serving as KCC chair, she made remarks violating her duty of political neutrality on YouTube broadcasts and engaged in illegal pre-election campaigning. Police referred the case to prosecutors without detention in November last year and referred it again in April after conducting a supplementary investigation.
