[Financial News] Konkuk University has established a dedicated fund to invest in advanced technology startups by combining the region's science and technology infrastructure with the Seoul metropolitan area's investment network.
Konkuk University announced on the 1st that it had completed the formation meeting for the Daejeon Startup City–Konkuk University Anchor Fund No. 1 and finished the registration process with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
The fund will focus on identifying and investing in promising companies with globally leading technologies in fields such as system semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology and healthcare, robotics, and aerospace. Rather than simply providing capital, it is structured to support companies throughout their growth, from technology validation and connection to the government's Tech Incubator Program for Startup Korea (TIPS) to follow-on investment and overseas expansion.
Four organizations, including Konkuk University Technology Holdings, the Daejeon Center for Creative Economy & Innovation, Wintree Partners, and Lets, will jointly manage the fund. The initiative brings together Daejeon's research and development (R&D) infrastructure with the Seoul metropolitan area's technology commercialization and investment networks to establish an investment system based on public-private cooperation.
Each organization will support companies by leveraging its own strengths. The Daejeon Center for Creative Economy & Innovation will identify regional technology companies and oversee research, development, and demonstration, while Konkuk University Technology Holdings will connect them with technologies and intellectual property held by the university. Wintree Partners, an investment specialist, will handle follow-on fundraising, and Lets will focus on nurturing early-stage companies.
Konkuk University President Won Jong-pil said, "A sustainable innovation ecosystem can be created when a university's research achievements, talent, and startups are organically connected." He added, "We will actively support promising companies we identify so that they can take another step forward through investment and technology commercialization."
