[Financial News] LG Electronics is building a new plant in the United States to quickly respond to surging demand for cooling solutions for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and accelerate its push into the market. The company is also expanding its domestic production lines as it steps up efforts to capture the AI data center cooling solutions market.
LG Electronics announced on the first that it will build a Chiller production plant in Windsor, Commonwealth of Virginia, with production targeted to begin in the first half of next year.
The Chiller plant being built will have a total floor area of 32,000 square meters and a site area of 170,000 square meters. It will produce air-cooled Chillers primarily supplied to AI data centers.
A Chiller is a cooling system that produces large quantities of chilled water. It is used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems across a range of settings, including large buildings, commercial facilities, factories, and data centers. Chillers are considered a core component of data center cooling solutions, as the chilled water they produce is used for everything from air cooling to liquid cooling in data centers.
LG Electronics plans to use the new U.S. Chiller plant to actively respond to rapidly growing demand for data center Chillers in North America. According to market research firm Omdia, the power capacity required by data centers worldwide is expected to rise sharply from 226 gigawatts (GW) this year to 420 GW in 2030. North America is projected to account for 60% of that demand. In other words, LG Electronics' U.S. Chiller production hub is expected to serve as a foothold for the company's full-scale push into the U.S. data center market.
LG Electronics will also establish new air-cooled Chiller production lines and upgrade its production equipment at its Pyeongtaek and Changwon plants.
The company will boost productivity and meet increased demand by introducing new flow-line production equipment, in which processes from the initial to the final stage are carried out on a single conveyor. Domestic Chiller production lines will be expanded in phases at the Pyeongtaek and Changwon plants by the end of this year, creating a system capable of operating multiple lines simultaneously.
The investments in the new U.S. plant and expanded domestic production lines total 150 billion won. LG Electronics plans to continue increasing production capacity by expanding production lines and upgrading equipment at its global production bases.
Lee Jaesung, president of LG Electronics' ES Division, said, "We will continue to strengthen our stable supply capabilities in cooling solutions, a key infrastructure component for AI data centers, and actively pursue the rapidly growing market demand."
