Hanwha Foundation of Culture announced on the 1st that it will hold the emerging artists’ group exhibition 'MacGuffin' from October 8 to December 19 at Space ZeroOne, an exhibition space in New York City.
The exhibition is a visual arts and literature collaboration project involving five emerging Korean artists and five writers from around the world. Writers from the literary residency program at New York-based artist residency Art OMI will respond in writing to works by Korean artists Gang Dong-ho, goyoson, Jongwan Jang, Kim Ji-seon and Ian Ha.
Rather than explaining the intentions behind the works, the writers view them from their own perspectives and develop new stories. The exhibition’s title, 'MacGuffin,' refers to a device in film that sets a story in motion but is not itself the purpose or conclusion of the events. The paintings and sculptures on display likewise serve as starting points that trigger new stories rather than conveying fixed interpretations, the foundation explained.
The exhibition is a project linking the foundation’s overseas residency support program with the operation of its exhibition space in New York City.
Through the Youngmin International Artist Residency Grant, the foundation has supported the overseas creative activities of emerging Korean artists. Since last year, it has also been sending selected artists to Art OMI. This time, it expanded the scope of the partnership by connecting Space ZeroOne’s exhibition space with Art OMI’s international network of creators.
Hanwha Foundation of Culture plans to continue expanding the foundation for emerging artists’ international activities through overseas residency support and exhibition projects. In particular, it plans to use Space ZeroOne as a platform connecting emerging Korean artists with international audiences, creators and cultural and arts networks, thereby continuing to broaden points of contact with Korean art.[email protected] Reporter Jung Won-il[email protected] Jung Won-il Reporter
