[Financial News] Who gets the profits and rights generated by content that achieves global success? The new book Super IP examines the conditions needed for the popularity of K-content to become a lasting asset for creators and production companies.
Yoon Song-yi, a researcher in cultural content studies and a broadcasting network programming standards practitioner, analyzes control over intellectual property (IP) through the contract and distribution structures of Squid Game and KPop Demon Hunters. The book explores how to expand fictional universes and follow-up content based on webtoons and web novels, as well as the approach of accumulating IP like Disney.
It also examines consumption trends driven by photocards, character merchandise and fandoms. The book broadens its focus to user data accumulated by platforms and the use of broadcast archives for artificial intelligence (AI) training. Its argument is that, beyond creative capabilities, contracts and rights management must be designed alongside points of connection with fandoms.
