[Financial News] WEBTOON appointed Webtoon Entertainment President Kim Yong-soo and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) Kim Gyu-nam as its new co-CEOs. Through the appointments, the company aims to accelerate the refinement of region-specific growth strategies and strengthen synergies across the organization.
According to industry sources on the 1st, Kim Yong-soo will retain his role as president while also serving as co-CEO of WEBTOON. Kim Gyu-nam will move from Chief Risk Officer (CRO) at Webtoon Entertainment to Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), while also taking on the role of WEBTOON co-CEO.
Junkoo Kim, CEO and board chair of Webtoon Entertainment, will focus more closely on the company's fundamentals and cultivate long-term growth drivers while supporting the management efforts of the heads of its regional entities.
This reorganization builds on the leadership changes made at Webtoon Entertainment last March. At the time, Webtoon Entertainment created the position of president and appointed Kim Yong-soo, then chief strategy officer (CSO), to the role. The structure allows CEO Junkoo Kim to focus on long-term growth and the company's future direction, while President Kim Yong-soo concentrates on improving operational efficiency and accelerating execution. The latest changes extend the enhancement of headquarters-level governance to the regional entities.
Since joining WEBTOON in 2018, co-CEO Kim Gyu-nam has led various areas related to the creator ecosystem as head of content policy. In particular, he oversaw the establishment of content operations processes and guidelines, as well as the launch of creator systems. He also worked with governments and industry organizations in various countries to combat the illegal distribution of webtoons, contributing to the protection of creators and intellectual property.
Going forward, Kim Gyu-nam will strengthen communication with Korean partners and organizations while Junkoo Kim focuses on expanding into global markets. He also plans to build partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders.
Since joining the company in 2022, co-CEO Kim Yong-soo has contributed to strengthening its financial health and completing a successful initial public offering (IPO). He also served as CSO and head of the global webtoon business, leading partnerships with major global entertainment companies. Since being appointed president of Webtoon Entertainment last March, he has led efficient company-wide operations and accelerated execution.
“Kim Gyu-nam, as co-CEO, will strengthen the domestic creator ecosystem by communicating more closely with Korean creators, partners and various institutions,” WEBTOON said. “With President Kim Yong-soo, who oversees company-wide business operations, also serving as co-CEO of WEBTOON, we will be able to enhance strategic consistency and speed of execution.”
“Korea is the most mature market for the webtoon industry and an important hub in the global webtoon ecosystem, where both the strengthening of a stable business foundation and new initiatives are required,” Junkoo Kim said. “Through this reorganization, Webtoon Entertainment has improved the efficiency of its global governance while strengthening a professional management system tailored to Korea's market conditions.”
