[Financial News]  Daewoong Pharmaceutical is expanding its digital healthcare business by offering a medical data protection and recovery solution.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on the 1st that it had signed an agreement with AI-based digital healthcare company Hippocrat Labs for the domestic distribution rights to Medisafe, a distributed backup and security solution, and would supply it to hospitals and clinics nationwide.
Under the agreement, Hippocrat Labs will be responsible for developing Medisafe and providing technical support, while Daewoong Pharmaceutical will handle sales and marketing through its nationwide network of hospitals and clinics.
Medisafe is a solution that separately distributes and backs up hospital data, enabling rapid recovery when existing data become inaccessible due to cyber incidents such as ransomware. The solution stores backup data separately from a hospital's internal network, reducing the risk that operational and backup data will be affected at the same time.
When a medical institution is infected with ransomware, staff may lose access to medical records and test results, disrupting the retrieval and entry of medical records, the review of test results and the issuing of prescriptions. If the disruption continues for an extended period, it can affect not only hospital operations but also patient care.
According to the Korea Social Security Information Service, the number of cyber incidents identified at medical institutions in South Korea rose from 18 in 2020 to 71 in 2024. As cyberattacks on medical institutions can lead not only to personal information leaks but also to delays in treatment or interruptions to medical services, establishing a system capable of restoring data after an incident is becoming increasingly important.
As medical institutions increasingly adopt AI and undergo digital transformation, they are accumulating and utilizing more medical data, including medical records, test results, imaging information and biometric signals. As a result, the volume and scope of data that medical institutions must manage are also expanding.
Responsibilities related to personal information protection are also being strengthened. Under the revised Personal Information Protection Act, the responsibilities of business owners and executives for protecting personal information have been clarified. Repeated or serious violations of the act may result in a fine of up to 10% of total revenue.
Daewoong Pharmaceutical plans to expand its existing digital healthcare business into the area of supporting medical data protection and recovery through the supply of Medisafe.
Choi Hyun-seop, CEO of Hippocrat Labs, said, "Medisafe is a solution that reduces the risk of operational and backup data being affected together by storing backup data in distributed locations separate from a hospital's internal network. We will support the rapid recovery of data needed for medical treatment when an incident occurs."
Lee Chang-jae, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, said, "As AI and digital technologies are rapidly being introduced into medical settings, securely managing medical data is becoming increasingly important. We will expand our business into infrastructure that supports data protection and recovery, thereby supporting the stable digital operations of medical institutions."
