The book analyzes leaders' abilities alongside the conditions of their times in four fields: politics, business, sports, and religion. It uses presidential illnesses and assassinations, the sudden deaths of chief executives, and coaches' dismissals as natural experiments, examining the role of leaders through historical cases and statistics.
The book explores whether Hamlet would have been created without William Shakespeare through the Hamlet test, which examines whether a particular individual could have been replaced. It considers how institutions, organizations, and chance, as well as individual talent, shape success and failure. The Korean edition includes a special foreword addressed to Korean readers.
