[Financial News] Bitcoin, which has weakened every September, is expected to post its highest-ever September return this year, potentially breaking the "Red September" jinx.
Bitcoin Rose 7.33% Last Month... Its Highest-Ever Return
According to Newsis on the 1st, Bitcoin rose 7.33% last month. That slightly exceeds the 7.29% recorded in 2024. If the current gain holds through the end of the month, Bitcoin will post its highest September return since related statistics began being compiled in 2013.
Bitcoin closed lower in eight of the 13 Septembers from 2013 through last year, showing a generally weak performance. In particular, its September return was negative for six consecutive years from 2017 through 2022. With an average historical September return of -2.34%, the lowest among the 12 months, the period has been dubbed "Red September."
The September trend, however, has changed recently. Bitcoin rose 3.91% in September 2023, followed by gains of 7.29% in 2024 and 5.16% last year. If it finishes higher this year, it will mark the first time Bitcoin has posted four consecutive annual September gains.
ETF Inflows Spark a Turnaround Despite U.S. Rate Hike Headwinds
Bitcoin faced a setback in mid-September when a procedural vote in the United States Senate on the virtual asset market structure bill, the "CLARITY Act," fell through. In the aftermath, Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net outflows of $450.4 million, or approximately 609.7 billion won, in a single day.
The following day, Sept. 16, the Federal Reserve System (Fed) raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points, sending Bitcoin down to around $75,000 at one point. Sentiment later turned around as funds began flowing back in, led by ETFs.
To surpass its previous record—the 2024 September return—Bitcoin must close at approximately $83,600 or higher based on its September UTC closing price. As of 7:30 a.m. on the 1st, Bitcoin was trading at $83,935 per coin on Upbit.
