Alphabet Inc. announced on the 30th (local time) that it had unveiled Gemini 4 Argon and set a new record in actual software engineering evaluations. It explained that the model tied for first place in cybersecurity evaluations and also achieved the highest performance in separate benchmarks measuring professional capabilities in fields such as finance and law.
In particular, Argon has moved beyond the research phase and is already being deployed in Google's internal operations. Google announced that it has used Argon for data center memory optimization, securing hundreds of terabytes (TB) of memory space without purchasing additional hardware. Quantum computing researchers are also using Argon.
The area Google particularly emphasized in this model is cybersecurity. Argon has significantly improved cybersecurity capabilities compared with 'Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber,' which was released earlier this month, and demonstrated higher performance in vulnerability detection.
In cybersecurity evaluation benchmarks, it tied for first place with OpenAI's 'GPT-6 Astra' and 'Grok 4.7'. In the Vals Index, an indicator evaluating professional skills in fields such as finance and law, it surpassed GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's 'Claude Fable 5.1'.
Over the past year, Google has focused on expanding fast and low-cost Flash models. In contrast, Gemini 4 targets the market for cutting-edge 'frontier models' that push the limits of performance. This comes about a year after Gemini 3 propelled Google back to the forefront of the AI model competition.
However, Google will not immediately make Argon fully available to the general public. Instead, it plans to launch the model in stages after first providing it to trusted cybersecurity partners. It is also currently conducting pre-launch safety assessments with the U.S. government.
