Gumi Rises as a Hub for the Humanoid Industry

[Financial News, Gumi = Kim Jang-wook, Reporter] Gumi City is emerging as a hub of South Korea’s humanoid industry.
South Korea’s leading manufacturing city, Gumi has been designated as a Specialized Complex for National Advanced Strategic Industries in the robotics sector. The designation gives the city a new growth engine to become a key manufacturing hub for the country’s humanoid industry.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Daegu–Gyeongbuk (Gumi and Pohang) was jointly designated on the 30th as a Specialized Complex for National Advanced Strategic Industries in the robotics and humanoid sectors.
With Gumi National Industrial Complex Nos. 1–5 included in the specialized complex, Gumi has taken on a central role in the national robotics industry. It will lead the development and manufacturing of core robotic components and finished products while establishing a stable supply chain.
Mayor Kim Jang-ho emphasized, "Being designated as a Specialized Complex for National Advanced Strategic Industries in the robotics sector, following semiconductors, marks a new turning point for Gumi. It will raise the city’s competitiveness in advanced industries and enable it to emerge as the center of South Korea’s humanoid industry."
He added, "We will organically connect the development, production, demonstration, and commercialization of core components. By building an industrial ecosystem that attracts companies, technology, and talent, we will develop Gumi into a global hub for the robotics industry that competes not only across South Korea but around the world."
Gumi’s strength lies in its powerful manufacturing and production capabilities accumulated in Gumi National Industrial Complex Nos. 1–5, the designated area of the specialized complex. Building on its electronics and information technology manufacturing base, Gumi plans to develop and manufacture everything from core robotic components—including actuators, sensors, controllers, and batteries—to finished products. It also intends to transform the technology and production expertise of existing companies into a source of competitiveness for the future humanoid industry.
In particular, Gumi plans to encourage local companies to enter the robotics industry and attract new businesses and investment. It will foster Gumi National Industrial Complex Nos. 1–5 as a national hub responsible for South Korea’s humanoid core components and robotics manufacturing supply chain.
Through this specialized complex, North Gyeongsang Province will build a full-cycle robotics industry ecosystem linking Gumi’s manufacturing and production capabilities with Pohang’s research, development, and demonstration capabilities. Gumi will lead the development and manufacturing of core components and finished products as well as the supply chain, while Pohang will support the demonstration of completed robots, software and AI advancement, and field applications.
With research, development, and demonstration capabilities added to Gumi, the center of manufacturing and mass production, the construction of a national robotics industry ecosystem—in which technology becomes products and products reach the market—is expected to accelerate.
Earlier, at the public briefing on the vision for the development of advanced industries in the Yeongnam region held in July, the government presented a future manufacturing strategy centered on Gumi to build a super-innovative advanced robotics belt. Gumi’s industrial environment reached another turning point when Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS announced investment plans totaling 19 trillion won in humanoid and AI-related fields in the city.
