Korea National Railway and UBTZ to Jointly Pursue Major Railway Projects in Mongolia

[Financial News] Korea National Railway will jointly identify and pursue major railway projects in Mongolia with UBTZ, including the double-tracking of the Trans-Mongolian Railway.
Korea National Railway signed an MOU with UBTZ on the 30th at its Seoul Metropolitan Area Headquarters to cooperate on railway projects. UBTZ is a joint venture established by Mongolia and Russia and is responsible for operating and maintaining major railway infrastructure, including the Trans-Mongolian Railway.
The two organizations agreed to jointly develop Mongolia's short-, medium- and long-term railway networks, as well as double-track and improve the 1111-km Altanbulag–Zamyn-Üüd section of the Trans-Mongolian Railway. They will also cooperate on railway education and the training of specialized personnel.
The Trans-Mongolian Railway connects Russia, Mongolia and China and serves as a major route for international logistics and resource transportation.
Previously, Korea National Railway won a 42.5 billion won project in 2021 to build a signaling and communications system for the Tavan Tolgoi–Zuunbayan railway. In 2024, it secured a 58 billion won project to provide project management consultancy (PMC) services for the construction of the Ulaanbaatar subway.
Korea National Railway Chairman Jeong Jin-hyeok said, "I hope the signing of this MOU will serve as an opportunity to further expand exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in the railway sector." He added, "Based on our respective experience and capabilities, we will do our utmost to create tangible results, including winning additional railway projects in Mongolia."
