[Financial News] People Power Party lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin has publicly criticized Park Jin-young, co-chair of the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange and chief producer of JYP Entertainment, over his remarks that he was serving in an "unpaid capacity."
Bae said through social media late on the 29th that, based on her analysis of data submitted by the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange, Park had been receiving approximately 2 million won per month in position-related expenses since November last year, bringing the total to more than 20 million won to date. She also alleged that he had been provided with a business expense card, overseas business-trip expenses and support staff.
Park had previously said on a television program that he worked on a non-full-time basis as committee chair and did not receive an annual salary.
Bae responded, "Position-related expenses are public-service expenses and effectively constitute a salary. There would be no reason for this money to be paid if he were not the chair."
She added, "Park said it was 'unpaid service,' but did he consider it 'unpaid service' because it was small compared with the appearance fees paid for entertainers' events?"
She also criticized him, saying, "I do not know whether there is confusion between the chairmanship of the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange, which receives ministerial-level treatment, and the status of an entertainer whose image management is vital. However, the head of an institution that spends national funds must not tell the public things that are untrue."
Park is scheduled to appear as a witness at the parliamentary audit of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee of the National Assembly on the 7th of next month. Lee Jae-jung, chair of the committee, said Park had conveyed his intention to appear in person as a witness, rather than as a reference witness, and provide a full explanation to the public.
