[Financial News] IS Dongseo is joining an international partnership aimed at addressing plastic pollution and marine litter.
According to IS Dongseo on the 30th, the company has officially joined the Global Partnership on Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter (GPML), for which the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the secretariat.
GPML is a global multi-stakeholder partnership launched in 2012 following the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). Governments, companies, international organizations, research institutions and non-governmental organizations participate in the partnership to share knowledge and experience in preventing plastic pollution and marine litter, while exploring cooperation in resource circulation, including reduction, reuse and recycling.
IS Dongseo has expanded its circular economy businesses, which turn waste into new resources, based on its capabilities in construction, environmental services and manufacturing. The company is pursuing resource circulation businesses such as waste battery recycling, construction waste treatment, waste intermediate processing and waste-to-energy projects. It is also expanding into the renewable energy sector.
In particular, IS Dongseo is pursuing a 340-MW offshore wind power project near Yokjido Island in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province. After obtaining approval for the power generation business last year, the company is currently carrying out subsequent procedures, including an environmental impact assessment. Through offshore wind power, which is expected to offer strong growth potential, IS Dongseo plans to establish a foundation for mid- to long-term growth in the eco-friendly energy sector.
The company is also continuing in-house eco-friendly campaigns involving employees and construction sites. For two consecutive years, it has carried out waste-reduction activities, including upcycling discarded plastics collected by employees and discarded banners generated at construction sites into umbrellas and delivering them to local communities.
An IS Dongseo official said, "After encountering various environmental issues, including the recent severe flooding in Nepal, we once again recognized the importance of paying attention to and responding to environmental problems. We will use our membership in GPML as an opportunity to join the international community's efforts and continue our activities to reduce plastic use and promote resource circulation."
