[Financial News] Just 100 grams—not even half a carton of milk. That cruel, capricious weight shattered a national team athlete's dream of winning an Asian Games medal. Jung Su-jin of Yong In University, one of South Korea's most promising lightweight female judokas, ran into the obstacle of a random weigh-in on the day of competition and ended her tournament in vain without ever setting foot on the mat.
Jung Su-jin was scheduled to face Aliya Muminova of Tajikistan in the women's 48-kilogram round of 16 at the 2026 Asian Games in judo, held on the 30th at Aichi International Arena in Nagoya, but she never appeared at the venue.
According to a Korea Judo Association official, Jung withdrew after failing the random weigh-in held on the morning of competition. She had passed the official weigh-in the previous day without incident. However, the International Judo Federation (IJF) has recently begun randomly selecting athletes for surprise weigh-ins on the morning of competition to prevent extreme dehydration and excessive weight cutting.
The weight allowance for the same-day random weigh-in is 5% above the athlete's weight class. As a judoka in the 48-kilogram division, Jung was allowed to weigh no more than 50.4 kilograms. Unfortunately, she was selected in the random draw, and the measurement showed that she exceeded the limit by exactly 100 grams. The rules were unforgiving: that 100-gram excess immediately resulted in disqualification.
Jung was considered a promising prospect after winning bronze medals at the Junior Asian Championships in both 2024 and 2025. She arrived in Nagoya with high hopes for her first Asian Games, but a momentary failure to manage her weight denied her even the chance to prove on the mat what four years of hard work had produced.
