[Financial News] Ewha Womans University announced on the 30th that it had invited Brian P. Schmidt, the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics laureate and a distinguished professor at ANU, to deliver a special lecture.
About 200 professors, researchers and students attended the special lecture, held on the 21st at Ewha Womans University Comprehensive Science Building in Seodaemun District, Seoul. The event was the third program in the Global Leader Lecture Series, organized to mark Ewha Womans University's 140th anniversary.
Under the theme 'From the Beginning to the End of the Universe,' Professor Schmidt traced the universe's more than 13-billion-year history from the Big Bang. He explained in accessible terms how scientists have uncovered the secrets of the universe, as well as major mysteries that modern astronomy still has to solve, including dark energy and black holes.
After the lecture, a 'Student Roundtable' session followed, providing an opportunity for students to share their research experiences directly with the world-renowned scholar and discuss the universe and science.
Professor Schmidt, who served as the speaker, is an astrophysicist who jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physics for establishing that the universe's expansion is accelerating. He earned his doctorate from Harvard University and served as president of ANU from 2016 to 2023.
An Ewha Womans University official said, "It was a meaningful opportunity to share the latest research findings of a Nobel laureate and engage directly with a leading scholar from around the world," adding, "We will continue to expand academic exchanges with world-class researchers across a range of disciplines."
