Lieutenant General Kang Hyun-woo, Chief of Operations at the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (ROK JCS), said at a briefing on the 30th, "North Korea must immediately halt activities that heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula, including the so-called fortification of the border. We strongly urge an apology from North Korea along with responsible measures."
He added, "On the 21st, an incident occurred in which our service members, carrying out a routine search operation south of the MDL, sustained serious injuries from mines planted by North Korean troops."
The ROK JCS said that North Korea has continued to pursue so-called fortification of the border, including laying mines near the MDL, despite the South Korean government's consistent efforts to promote peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula. It said these actions are contributing to heightened tensions in border areas between the two Koreas.
Lieutenant General Kang said, "This is a clear violation of the Korean Armistice Agreement and undermines the spirit of existing agreements between the two Koreas. It must be halted immediately." He also warned, "We make it clear that North Korea will bear full responsibility for any situations that arise in the future."
