[Financial News] Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the agency was fully prepared to immediately dispatch inspectors to Iran.
In an interview with Russia's RIA Novosti on the 30th (local time), Grossi clarified his position on whether nuclear inspections in Iran could resume, saying, "If requested, we can dispatch them immediately, as soon as tomorrow."
The remarks are understood to underscore that the IAEA has established measures to provide immediate technical support if the United States and Iran reach a compromise in nuclear negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Grossi expressed confidence, saying, "Dispatching the inspection team is realistically possible, and our team is already prepared to return. We know exactly where to go and what to do. This is not just talk; we have the practical capacity to carry it out."
Iran previously allowed IAEA inspections under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Iran nuclear deal reached in 2015.
However, Iran completely suspended the inspections after the United States carried out airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June last year. The issue of resuming nuclear inspections was also discussed as a key agenda item when the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the war in June, but the two sides ultimately failed to bridge their differences. Further airstrikes were exchanged between the two countries, preventing the resumption of inspections to this day.
Meanwhile, the IAEA is increasing pressure on Iran in an effort to secure its cooperation. On the 9th, the agency referred Iran's violation of its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the first time in 20 years.
