[Financial News] Golden Blue International CEO Park So-young said on the 30th, "Taiwanese single-malt whisky 'Kavalan' has grown 200-fold in Korea in the nine years since its domestic launch."
Kavalan, first introduced to Korea by Golden Blue International in September 2017, began as a Third World whisky produced in subtropical Taiwan, which was then regarded as a whisky wasteland.
Since its launch, the brand has been credited with reshaping Korea's single-malt whisky market. Its distinctive flavor, created through a unique maturation process that takes advantage of the hot and humid climate, spread by word of mouth.
In fact, Kavalan's total sales volume in 2025, including domestic and duty-free sales, increased by approximately 200-fold from 2017.
Analysts say the company's channel-specific strategy, based on an analysis of the characteristics of the domestic and duty-free markets, was a key factor behind the success.
In the domestic market, which Golden Blue International cultivated from the time of launch, sales volume in 2025 increased by more than 68-fold from 2017, helped by expanded distribution and growing public awareness. Kavalan built a solid consumer base not only through retail channels such as hypermarkets and smart-order services, but also through entertainment channels, including major bars. It has since established itself as a mainstream brand in Korea's single-malt whisky market.
Its strong position in the domestic market led to expanded sales through duty-free channels. Sales through duty-free outlets, which Kavalan entered in earnest in 2021, soared nearly 11-fold in four years, producing notable results. Among travelers, it became known as "the whisky people line up for when duty-free shops open" and a "must-buy shopping item," building a strong fan base.
This growth was driven by the product's quality, which swept major global spirits competitions, as well as the perfect synergy created by Golden Blue International's premiumization and localization marketing strategies.
Golden Blue International continues to operate Team Kavalan, a project conducted in collaboration with leading Korean bartenders. It has also consistently developed brand experience programs through tasting events and guest-bartending events, including a collaboration with Chinese cuisine master chef Lee Yeon-bok.
Ahead of its 10th anniversary next year, Golden Blue International plans to carry out a wide range of online and offline marketing activities to further strengthen its market dominance.
Park So-young, CEO of Golden Blue International, said, "The fact that Kavalan was able to leap from an unfamiliar Taiwanese whisky to one of Korea's leading single-malt whiskies over the past nine years is the result of consumers' support and differentiated marketing. We will continue to do our utmost to provide Korean whisky enthusiasts with a higher level of culinary experience and a refined drinking culture."
