Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 30th that it had won an order for two Very Large Gas Carriers from a Bermuda-based shipowner for KRW 307.4 billion. The vessels are scheduled for delivery by February 2030.
Including this contract, Samsung Heavy Industries' cumulative orders in its merchant vessel division this year have reached 44 vessels worth $7.5 billion. This represents 132% of the division's annual order target of $5.7 billion. After securing orders for 28 vessels in the first half, the company has continued its strong order momentum by winning contracts for 16 more vessels in the second half.
By vessel type, the company has built a diversified order portfolio, including 18 liquefied natural gas carriers, including one LNG floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), two ethane carriers, six gas carriers, four container ships, and 14 crude oil tankers.
In its offshore division, the company secured orders for two floating liquefied natural gas production facilities (FLNGs) worth $4.4 billion. This is equivalent to 54% of the division's annual target of $8.2 billion. Combined across the two divisions, cumulative orders totaled 46 vessels and $11.9 billion, reaching 86% of the overall annual order target of $13.9 billion.
A Samsung Heavy Industries official said, "As global energy market conditions change and the shift toward greener vessels accelerates, customer demand for shipbuilding is becoming more diverse." The official added, "We will proactively respond to customer demand by drawing on our shipbuilding experience across various vessel types and our competitive edge in eco-friendly technologies."
