[Financial News] Divorced men and women said they feel most hurt when their families leave them responsible for caring for or nursing their parents.
On the 29th, remarriage-focused matchmaking agency Only U and marriage information company Bienarae released the results of a survey conducted from the 21st to the 27th among 628 divorced men and women nationwide who hoped to remarry, including 314 men and 314 women. The survey asked, "When do you feel hurt by being treated differently at your family home?"
The survey found that both men and women felt most hurt when they were left responsible for supporting or caring for their parents simply because they lived alone.
Among men, 31.2% selected "being asked to support their parents," followed by "being solely responsible for caring for elderly parents" (28.0%), "being saddled with household chores during holidays" (24.2%), and "unequal distribution of their parents' inheritance" (16.6%).
Among women, "being solely responsible for caring for elderly parents" ranked first at 36.3%, followed by "being asked to support their parents" at 28.3%. This was followed by "unequal distribution of their parents' inheritance" (20.1%) and "being saddled with household chores during holidays" (15.3%).
An Only U official explained, "As people live longer, more families have parents who have difficulty moving around or suffer from various illnesses. Parents' care or nursing is often left to a divorced sibling who lives alone, but this places a double burden on that person."
The official added, "Divorced singles often suffer simply because they are divorced. Parents, siblings, and other family members should be considerate of their situation and ensure that they do not face uncomfortable or unfair circumstances."
