[Financial News]  Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co., presented a vision for the future of the Western world. He said Europe should revive its stagnant economy and significantly strengthen its own defense capabilities.
In an op-ed sent to The Wall Street Journal on the 29th (local time), Dimon said, "The United States should offer Europe bold incentives," adding, "If Europe faithfully implements the economic and military reforms essential to security and resilience, the United States should enter negotiations with Europe to conclude 'one big, beautiful' economic and free-trade agreement (FTA)."
He added, "Many of the current disputes between the United States and Europe are exceedingly minor compared with the scale and benefits this agreement would bring. The agreement could be expanded to friendly democracies such as South Korea, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia and the Philippines."
Dimon emphasized that such seamless trade relations would be a game changer for the United States and its allies. They would enable the countries to lead global trade rules in the face of pressure from authoritarian forces and strengthen their alliances.
Dimon's free-trade approach stands in stark contrast to the protectionist policies pursued by the Donald Trump administration, which has clashed with major trading partners, including the European Union and Canada, over tariffs and a hard-line negotiating strategy.
Dimon pointed out that Europe needs to complete its long-standing initiatives, the Capital Markets Union (CMU) and Banking Union, to secure its competitiveness. He also stressed the need to implement the recommendations of the Draghi report and establish self-sufficiency in defense, manufacturing and energy.
He explained, "A Europe that mobilizes capital, nurtures innovative companies, integrates defense production and reduces strategic dependence will become a more capable security partner and a stronger economic partner. This would be a powerful counterweight to China's economic influence."
He went on to point out that the United States must also work to maintain its position as the world's leading military and economic power, while revitalizing the faltering 'American Dream' and American values.
Dimon concluded his op-ed by saying, "If a reaffirmation of American values and alliances is combined with bold reforms in Europe, it will be a perfect geoeconomic victory and guarantee prosperity and strength for the Western world for the next 250 years."
