[Financial News] On the 30th, KB Securities projected that the strategic value of Samsung Electronics' memory business would be re-evaluated based on investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and rising DRAM prices.
Kim Dong-won, Head of Research at KB Securities, said regarding Samsung Electronics' investment in the U.S. AI infrastructure company Helix, "The significance of this investment lies beyond a simple financial equity investment in that Samsung Electronics has directly entered the top tier of demand for AI data centers."
Samsung Electronics announced yesterday that it would invest a total of $1 billion in Helix together with affiliates including Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance. Samsung Electronics will invest $500 million, and the five affiliates will invest a combined $500 million.
Helix, launched last June, is an AI infrastructure company led by Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS). It aims to provide integrated services ranging from large-scale data center operations to power transmission, distribution, and network infrastructure. Samsung Electronics is participating as a founding investor alongside U.S. power company Vistra and the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA).
It was also predicted that the strong trend in DRAM prices would continue. KB Securities forecast that the average selling price (ASP) of DRAM in the third and fourth quarters of this year would rise by 15–20% compared to the previous quarter, and that it would record double-digit growth in the first quarter of next year. This is based on the explanation that major cloud service providers are offering higher prices in negotiations for the first quarter of next year than in the fourth quarter of this year to secure volume for the first half of next year.
"DRAM prices are highly likely to exceed existing market expectations for the time being, and the intensity and duration of price increases are also expected to be longer than anticipated," said Director Kim. He added, "As pricing power in the memory market is expected to shift more towards suppliers than buyers in the future, the strategic value of Samsung Electronics' memory business is also expected to be re-evaluated."
