[Financial News]  A debate has erupted over a story about a man who argued with his wife after trying to visit his parents' home in a soccer jersey during the Chuseok holiday.
On the 28th, JTBC's 'Sageon Banjang' introduced the story of a man in his 40s identified only as Mr. A.
Mr. A began by saying, "My parents live about 30 minutes away by car, so I visit them often. Just because it's a holiday, we don't hold a separate ancestral rite or gather the extended family. We simply have a light meal with my parents."
The conflict began when he tried to leave home wearing a soccer jersey that he usually wore for comfort. His wife was shocked when she saw him and demanded that he change immediately.
Mr. A said he planned to wear the jersey because "its stretchiness makes it comfortable, even after eating a lot, without feeling tight around the stomach." His wife insisted, "No matter how close you are, it is disrespectful for the eldest son to visit his parents wearing a soccer jersey. If my in-laws see you, they will say, 'Your wife said nothing and let you go like that,' and I will be criticized too. Change your clothes immediately."
In the end, Mr. A faced his wife's strong opposition, changed into different clothes and visited his parents' home.
Mr. A complained, "I am so informal with my parents that we speak casually with each other. I'm not going to my in-laws' home, and my parents wouldn't care at all, so I don't understand why my wife is making such a fuss."
The panelists had differing opinions after hearing the story.
Park Sang-hee, a professor of psychology, said, "Since they live nearby, he could simply go as he is, but people also wear new clothes during the holidays. Holidays are a time to express gratitude for abundance, and those who hold ancestral rites show respect for their ancestors. Even if no one else sees it, the formality and courtesy associated with the holiday should be observed even when visiting one's closest family members."
Attorney Park Ji-hoon also said, "She was asking him to do something that should basically be observed," adding, "Since it is a holiday, wearing a soccer jersey when visiting his parents is inappropriate."
Attorney Son Su Ho, however, said, "These days, soccer jerseys are expensive and are sold as stylish fashion items. For people who love soccer, wearing one can be a form of proper dress in its own way."
