OpenAI launches AI agent 'dots'—"Give it a goal, and it will work tirelessly on its own"

OpenAI launched the artificial intelligence (AI) agent 'dots' on the 29th (local time). The ambitious project comes as OpenAI faces pressure to monetize its AI technology ahead of an initial public offering (IPO). Dots was also launched amid intensifying competition, with Meta Platforms causing a stir by unveiling its AI agent Muse.
OpenAI unveiled 'dots' at its annual OpenAI DevDay event on the same day. According to OpenAI, the agent is designed to work independently around the clock until the user's goal is achieved and to learn from the user's feedback over time.
OpenAI has now made a full-fledged entry into the agent market, which has emerged as one of Silicon Valley's most promising AI sectors.
When assigned a role, the agent performs tasks autonomously. Within a cloud-based virtual computer, it actively completes projects involving research, data analysis, document creation and software development.
The agent runs on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's top-tier AI model. When users explain their goals, it identifies the relevant context and carries out tasks on its own.
According to the Financial Times (FT), 'dots' differs from existing AI chatbots and agents in four main ways.
First, it operates autonomously and independently without stopping. Rather than simply answering a user's question or carrying out a one-time command, it continues working on its own without requiring repeated user intervention once given a goal.
Existing AI agents operate within set parameters and require separate retraining, whereas dots learns from user feedback in real time as it works. Over time, it autonomously performs tasks in line with the user's work style and goals.
'Dots' goes beyond searching for information or assisting with writing to serve as a customized personal assistant. It can become deeply integrated into a person's daily life and work, handling entire specialized workflows on the user's behalf.
It also uses various software to reach conclusions directly, rather than merely providing guidance.
The biggest difference is that, unlike traditional AI tools that answer when asked, dots works tirelessly day and night once given a goal and improves through feedback, making it more like a personal assistant.
