[Financial News] Amid ongoing controversy over historical distortions surrounding the film 'Assassin(s),' movie YouTuber G Movie, who has 4.17 million subscribers, has deleted a related video.
As of the 30th, no content related to 'Assassin(s)' can be found on G Movie's channel. G Movie's representatives did not issue a separate statement explaining why the video was deleted.
'Assassin(s),' which was released on the 23rd, ranked near the top of the box office during the Chuseok holiday period. However, controversy continued over the film's historical premise. The production team said the film was not made to establish a specific historical conclusion or distort existing facts.
The film follows an investigation into the people behind the shooting of Yuk Young-soo on August 15, 1974. Figures from the People Power Party and elsewhere criticized the film for portraying former President Park Chung Hee as if he were connected to the incident. The production team responded that it had never identified a specific person as being behind the incident or presented a hypothesis as historical fact.
As the controversy spread, the production team issued a statement on the 28th explaining the film's nature and creative intent.
The production team explained, "'Assassin(s)' was not made to newly establish a specific historical conclusion or distort existing facts," adding, "It is a fictional film that combines cinematic imagination with publicly available records and materials."
It continued, "The film nowhere identifies a specific person as being behind the incident, nor does it present hypotheses or dramatic settings as historical facts," emphasizing, "It was not made with any specific political agenda."
The debate also continued online. Some criticism was directed at film critic Dong-jin Lee over his review video and at actors who endorsed the film at a VIP screening. Dong-jin Lee's review video was also switched to private on the 29th.
Against this backdrop, the deletion of G Movie's related video prompted various online reactions about the reason behind it. However, since G Movie did not disclose the reason, no direct connection between the controversy and the video's deletion has been confirmed.
Meanwhile, G Movie's representatives have yet to separately explain why the content was deleted.
