[Financial News] Samsung Electronics forecast that the number of its foundry (contract semiconductor manufacturing) customers would increase nearly fourfold by 2029 compared with 2017.
Noh Mi-jung, an executive vice president at Samsung Foundry, said at a briefing for listed companies held during 'Korea Premium Week 2026' at The Grand Lotte Seoul in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 29th, "The current number of customers has increased approximately threefold compared with when the division launched independently in 2017."
Noh added, "By 2029, the number of customers is expected to grow approximately fourfold from the time the division was launched."
Samsung Foundry is focusing on diversifying its business portfolio to achieve this. The company plans to expand its currently mobile-focused portfolio into artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). The results are already becoming visible. HPC accounted for just 5% of the business in 2017 but now represents 28%. That share is projected to rise to 66% in 2029.
Noh said, "By 2029, HPC customers are expected to make up a majority, while HPC is expected to account for well over half of the revenue mix."
Samsung Electronics aims to begin mass production using its third-generation 2-nanometer process in 2028, followed by mass production using a 1.4-nanometer process in 2029. It plans to begin initial operations at its first fab in Taylor, Texas, at the end of this year and start construction on a second fab within the year, with mass production targeted for 2030.
