【Financial News, Donghae—Kim Gi-seop】The Donghae AI data center, which is expected to attract up to 120 trillion won in investment, will complete its permitting procedures next month and break ground within the year.
According to Gangwon State on the 29th, Governor Woo Sang-ho visited the planned data center site in the Bukpyeong 2 General Industrial Complex in Donghae that day. He inspected the project's progress and discussed its status with GS Group officials leading the initiative. Donghae Mayor Lee Jeong-hak, Hwang Byeong-so, CEO of GS E&R, Baek Yun-hyeon, CEO of GS Donghae Power, and Do Hyeon-su, CEO of GS AI Infrastructure, also attended the site visit.
The visit was intended to allow the governor to review the construction process firsthand and hear the companies' difficulties so that tailored administrative support could be arranged in a timely manner. Woo toured the site, received an update from GS officials, and examined whether construction of key infrastructure, including power and water facilities needed for the data center, could begin ahead of schedule.
The Donghae Bukpyeong AI data center will have a total capacity of 2.4 gigawatts and is Asia's largest project of its kind, with up to 120 trillion won to be invested, including the cost of installing advanced equipment such as graphics processing units (GPUs). Gangwon State plans to develop the East Coast region into an advanced industrial hub centered on data centers by attracting follow-up investments and related companies.
Governor Woo Sang-ho said, "The construction of a 2.4-gigawatt data center, representing an investment of up to 120 trillion won, on a vacant industrial complex site signals that major corporate investment is beginning to flow into the region in earnest. We will support the swift start of construction on power and water infrastructure and train the data center professionals that companies need so that young people can secure good jobs and put down roots in the region." He added, "We will also expand opportunities for local companies to participate in the project so that the benefits of the investment are shared throughout the East Coast."
