[Financial News] Kim Chang-soo, former president of Chung-Ang University (CAU), is set to take the helm of Teachers Pension (Teachers' Pension), a major player in the capital markets that manages a fund of approximately 33 trillion won. Attention is also focused on the future direction of fund management, given his experience as an education administration expert and finance and accounting specialist who served on the Teachers' Pension Asset Management Committee.
According to investment banking industry sources and Teachers' Pension, newly appointed Chairman Kim Chang-soo took office as the 21st chairman of Teachers' Pension on the 28th. His three-year term runs through September 27, 2029.
Chairman Kim graduated from CAU's Department of Business Administration and earned a doctorate in business administration from Florida International University (FIU). He later served as a professor in CAU's College of Business Administration and as the university's president.
He also served as chairman of the National Education Commission's Special Committee on Reforming the University Admissions System, as a member of the National Education, Science and Technology Advisory Council under the president, and as a member of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology's Committee on University Structural Reform. He was also an outside director of a financial institution and a member of the Teachers' Pension Asset Management Committee.
Investment banking circles are focusing on the fact that Chairman Kim has already gained experience with Teachers' Pension's fund management decision-making structure. Teachers' Pension is one of Korea's major institutional investors, managing approximately 33 trillion won in assets across domestic and overseas stocks and bonds, as well as alternative investments such as real estate, infrastructure, and private equity.
Chairman Kim plans to enhance the institution's sustainability through stable pension-fund management and member-centered welfare services. He also presented a goal of transforming Teachers' Pension into a specialized institution for pensions, welfare, and fund management that grows together with teachers and education staff.
An investment banking industry official noted, "Given that Teachers' Pension is one of the major institutional investors in domestic and overseas capital markets, the key question is how the stability and profitability of fund management will be balanced after the new chairman takes office. In particular, the direction of medium- to long-term asset allocation, including alternative investments, warrants close attention."
