K-water, Korea South-East Power to Use Livestock Manure from Yeongju Dam as Power-Generation Fuel

[Financial News] K-water and Korea South-East Power will turn surplus livestock manure from upstream of Yeongju Dam into solid fuel for power generation. The pilot project aims to reduce water pollution sources while converting waste resources into energy.
K-water signed an agreement with Korea South-East Power on the joint promotion of solid livestock-manure fuel at its headquarters in Daejeon on the 29th.
Solid livestock-manure fuel is made by separating, drying and molding manure. K-water will handle production, supply and quality analysis, while Korea South-East Power will burn the fuel at a power plant and provide operational data.
Floating debris, including woody materials collected from the dam, will also be used as a supplementary raw material in fuel production. K-water plans to mix the livestock manure with the debris to increase the calorific value and reduce the burden of processing floating debris from the dam.
The two organizations will pursue energy production using the solid fuel within the year. Based on the results of the demonstration project, K-water plans to review ways to link dam water-quality management with resource circulation.
Jang Byeong-hun, head of K-water's Water Resources and Environment Division, said, "This agreement is significant because it marks the starting point for a circular model that reduces the inflow of pollutants from the basin into rivers and utilizes them as energy resources."
