Hongcheon County Joins Hands with the Kingdom of Cambodia to Strengthen Seasonal Worker Management

【Financial News | Hongcheon — Reporter Kim Ki-seop】Hongcheon County is exploring ways to prevent foreign seasonal workers from absconding and strengthen the selection process in cooperation with the government of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
According to Hongcheon County on the 29th, the county met with officials from the Kingdom of Cambodia's Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training the previous day to discuss difficulties encountered in the field and possible improvements in the process of introducing and managing seasonal workers. The meeting was attended by the ministry's deputy minister, deputy director, adviser, deputy section chief and administrative officer.
A total of 1,815 seasonal workers were brought in from the Philippines and the Kingdom of Cambodia this year. Of these, 181 are Cambodian nationals who entered South Korea through a family-invitation arrangement.
The two sides identified strengthening the selection process and preventing workers from absconding as key challenges revealed during the introduction of workers from the Kingdom of Cambodia. In particular, they agreed that the two countries should work together, in cooperation with local governments in the Kingdom of Cambodia, to make worker selection and Korean-language education more systematic.
Hongcheon County conveyed its view that a management system was needed to help workers settle securely in South Korea and work smoothly. This would include stronger training before entry, as well as continued monitoring of their adjustment and working conditions after arrival. Through the meeting, the county plans to review the current status of its seasonal worker program and further solidify a cooperative framework between the two countries based on mutual trust.
