"Making the East Coast an Advanced Energy Hub"—Gangwon's Hydrogen Cluster Breaks Ground

【Financial News, Donghae—Reporter Kim Ki-seop】A 66.8 billion-won cluster to support technology validation and commercialization for hydrogen companies has broken ground in Donghae.
According to Gangwon State on the 29th, the state held a groundbreaking ceremony that day for the Hydrogen Storage and Transport Cluster Development Project at the Donghae Bukpyeong 2nd General Industrial Complex. About 150 people attended, including Gangwon State Governor Woo Sang-ho, Donghae Mayor Lee Jung-hak, National Assembly member Lee Cheol-gyu, provincial and city council members, and representatives of related organizations and companies.
The cluster will serve as key infrastructure for hydrogen technology development, testing, demonstration, and corporate support. A total of 66.8 billion won will be invested from 2024 to 2028, while the three-story Industrial Promotion Center will support companies' technology development and commercialization. A Safety Testing Center, which will assess the safety of hydrogen technologies and products, and a System Demonstration Center, which will verify their performance and technology, will also be built.
Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. The testing and demonstration equipment required by the two centers will be installed in stages starting in 2027. Gangwon State plans to establish an industrial ecosystem spanning hydrogen production, storage, transport, and utilization, while building a cooperation network among industry, academia, and research institutions to lay the foundation for growth in the hydrogen industry across the state.
Governor Woo Sang-ho said, "Donghae will gain the infrastructure needed for companies to move in, develop technologies, and have their safety and performance validated." He added, "By linking it with Samcheok, where a Liquefied Hydrogen Reliability Assessment Center and a specialized hydrogen industrial complex are being developed, we will foster the east coast into an advanced energy hub centered on clean energy."
