Korea Meteorological Administration Officially Launches Korea Numerical Model Development Institute to Lead Numerical Weather Prediction R&D

[Financial News] The Korea Numerical Model Development Institute, dedicated to research and development on numerical weather prediction models, officially launched on the 29th.
KMA held an inauguration ceremony at its Seoul headquarters that day and announced that it would carry forward the achievements of its 15 years of Korean numerical-model research and development through an ongoing research system.

Numerical models are a core technology that calculates atmospheric conditions—including current temperature, wind and air pressure—using mathematical equations to predict future weather. They are considered the foundation that determines forecast accuracy.
Under Article 17-5 of the Meteorological Act, the Korea Numerical Model Development Institute specializes in research and development on numerical models and related technologies. Its responsibilities include research and development on numerical models, research on the use of new technologies, model utilization and dissemination, domestic and international joint research, exchanges among experts, and the education and training of specialists.
The institute aims to carry forward the achievements of Korean numerical-model research accumulated over the past 15 years through an ongoing research and development system rather than a one-off development project. KMA plans to support the institute so that it can focus on research and development, while establishing a structure in which research achievements are applied to actual forecasting and field needs are fed back into model development.
Officials from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), and the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), along with numerical-model experts from the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and Singapore, attended the inauguration ceremony.
KMA Administrator Lee Mi-seon said, "If the past 15 years were a period in which we secured numerical-model technology through our own efforts, now is the time to take another leap forward on a research foundation that enables our accumulated technology and talent to continue growing. I will support efforts to ensure that research achievements lead to better forecasting services for the public."
